AUDITION DATES: Sunday, August 23, and Monday, August 24 2026
AUDITION TIME:  7:00 pm
DIRECTOR: Lois Heagy and Greg Merkel
PERFORMANCE DATES: November 6-22, 2026

DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
  • Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
  • Age ranges given are playing ages.

CHARACTERS:
  • DR. DAVID MORTIMORE – PLAYING AGE 45-55
A successful and self-important neurologist hosting a prestigious medical lecture.  Confident on the surface but panics easily when his reputation is threatened.  His increasingly ridiculous lies and physical desperation drive the farce.  Must be played with total seriousness despite the absurdity.

  • DR. MIKE CONNOLLY – PLAYING AGE 25-35
A confident young doctor whose honesty and casual attitude contrast with David’s frantic behavior.

  • ROSEMARY MORTIMORE – PLAYING AGE 40-50
David’s intelligent, stylish wife.  Calm, controlled, and socially aware. She values respectability and order and is far less tolerant of chaos than her husband. Often underestimated, she proves sharper than David expects.

  • DR. HUBERT BONNEY – PLAYING AGE 45-55
David’s colleague and unwilling accomplice. Nervous, kind-hearted, and morally uncomfortable with lying. Bonney is constantly bullied into helping and becomes increasingly stressed and confused.

  • MATRON – PLAYING AGE 40-50
A strict, no-nonsense senior nurse. Highly professional and literal-minded, she struggles to understand the illogical behavior of the doctors. Her seriousness contrasts strongly with the madness around her.

  • SIR WILLOUGHBY DRAKE – PLAYING AGE 60-70
The proud chairman of the hospital. Traditional, formal, and deeply concerned with reputation. His presence raises the stakes, as he must never discover the truth.

  • JANE TATE – PLAYING AGE 35-45
A former nurse with a shocking connection to David’s past. Confident, direct, and emotionally grounded. Unlike most characters, she does not panic, which makes her presence even more disruptive to others.

  • SISTER – PLAYING AGE 20-25
A student nurse whose dedication and diligence working with Matron and her patients is obvious. Sometimes, her diligence doesn’t help the situation and only adds to the confusion.

  • LESLIE – PLAYING AGE 18-23
Jane Tate’s son. Quiet, awkward, and emotionally vulnerable. He is passed around, hidden, and misunderstood throughout the play, often treated more like an object than a person.

  • POLICE SERGEANT – PLAYING AGE FLEXIBLE
Calm, practical, and increasingly suspicious, adding pressure near the end of the play.

  • BILL – PLAYING AGE 40-60
A feisty, but confused, patient at the hospital who has no idea exactly where he is, but is willing and able to have fun and take advantage of the moment. NOTE: This role is more physical, as Bill, while in a wheelchair, gets pushed into a piece of furniture, through swinging doors and finally dumped into a window seat.

  • MOTHER – PLAYING AGE 70-80
The epitome of every bachelor’s mother, she has despaired of ever having a family of her son’s to dote upon. Sometimes a “bit muddled,” but always enthusiastic where her son is concerned.
